A Fire Pit Is an Outdoor Room, Not a Ring of Blocks

Anyone can set a steel ring on the grass. What makes a fire pit something you use three or four nights a week from May to November is everything around it: a level, well-drained pad that chairs do not sink into, seat walls at the right height and distance from the fire, lighting so you can see the steps after dark, and a clean transition into the patio or lawn you already have.

How We Build Them

• Poured concrete pad — excavated, compacted, formed, and finished level so furniture sits flat and water runs off. This is the part that separates a built fire pit from a gravel circle that ruts out after two seasons.
• The pit itself — a fire-rated block or steel-lined ring, built to a diameter that suits the space, with a proper cap and a hearth surface that will not spall from heat.
• Seat walls and columns — segmental block walls at seat height, set back far enough that the fire is comfortable rather than scorching, with pillars capped for lanterns or built-in lighting.
• Paver or concrete surround — a border ring that frames the pad and ties it into your existing patio, driveway, or walkway.
• Lighting — recessed hardscape lights in the caps and walls so the area is usable and safe once the fire dies down.

Wood-Burning or Gas

Most of what we build around here is wood-burning — it is simpler, cheaper, and it is what people picture. If you want gas, we build the pit with the enclosure, sleeve, and gas run stubbed to the right place, and coordinate with a licensed gas fitter for the final connection and appliance. Deciding this before we pour matters, because retrofitting a gas line under a finished pad means cutting it.

Placement, Drainage, and Local Rules

Where the pit goes matters as much as how it is built. We look at prevailing wind so smoke does not blow straight at the house or the neighbours, at setbacks from structures, fences, and the property line, at overhead tree limbs, and at how water moves across the yard — a fire pit sitting in a low spot is a puddle nine months a year. Open-burning and setback rules vary by town across Erie County, and we will flag anything on your site that looks like it needs a check with your town before we build.

Fire pit builds vary too much to quote by the square foot honestly.
